Manager of Landfill Operations

History

The Willow Creek Regional Waste Management Services Commission was established in 1993 and provides solid waste services to the M.D. of Willow Creek, the Town of Fort Macleod, the Town of Claresholm and the Town of Stavely. 

The Landfill operates under approval issued by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas for the purpose of operating a Class II Municipal Sanitary Landfill which serves a population of approximately 12,000 people and receives 6-8000 metric tonnes of Municipal, Industrial and Commercial / Institutional waste per year. 

The Manager of Landfill Operations reports to the Landfill Commission and is responsible for day-to-day operation of the landfill facility. The Landfill Manager is responsible for meeting environmental regulations, health and safety standards, financial performance, regulatory compliance and to provide exceptional customer service. 

Position Description: 

The Manager of Landfill Operations will be responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Willow Creek Regional Landfill.

Requirements:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or abilities required:

  • Supervise and manage staff to provide superior customer service.
  • Ensure smooth operation of the Landfill including daily cover requirements, and management of the landfill site.
  • Responsible for creating and updating waste management policies and procedures as directed by the Commission. 
  • Maintain reporting systems for ongoing operational issues including required environmental reporting, identification of trends, developing solutions, review and documentation of incident/accidents, and reporting of budget matters to the Commission. 
  • Ensure cleanliness and maintenance of the Commissions physical assets at the Landfill, through inspections and preventative maintenance.
  • Meet all regulatory requirements.
  • Respond to public inquiries.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • 3-5 years related experience in a commercial or industrial setting. Landfill operation experience preferred.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office software including Office, Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Certified Landfill Operator with Alberta Environment Landfill Operator Certificate or ability to achieve within 2 years of hiring.
  • Ability to develop, interpret and implement policy.
  • Ability to understand and meet required regulatory requirements.
  • Strong commitment to public and community service.
  • Ability to mentor and supervise staff.
  • Exceptional communication skills in both the verbal and written format.

Position Requirements

  • Ability to work collaboratively with the Commission, staff and the public
  • Organized in thought and process
  • The work of a Landfill Manager is performed both indoors and outdoors involving moderate physical risks of physical injury, moderate risks, discomfort and unpleasantness and include those typical of a municipal landfill. 
  • Work as a Landfill Manager requires occasional physical exertion such as long periods of standing, occasional carrying of moderately heavy items, bending, crouching, stooping and reaching.  This work requires average physical agility and dexterity. 

Applicants must be available to work shift work that includes a rotation of days, evenings and weekends.
