What happens when a complaint is received?
When a complaint is received, Officers follow a progressive enforcement process that emphasizes education, voluntary compliance, and problem-solving before enforcement action is considered. Each complaint is assessed on its own merits to ensure concerns are addressed appropriately and in accordance with applicable legislation or bylaws.
The Enforcement Process:
1. Complaint Received:
A concern is reported by a resident, agency, or officer observation and is reviewed to determine the appropriate response.
2. Investigation Conducted:
An officer gathers information, assesses the situation, and determines whether a bylaw or provincial offence may have occurred.
3. Education and Voluntary Compliance Sought:
Whenever possible, officers work with those involved to explain the requirements and achieve compliance without formal enforcement action.
4. Warning Issued (If appropriate):
If compliance is not achieved, a warning may be issued to provide an opportunity to correct the issue.
5. Enforcement Action Taken When Necessary:
When violations persist or circumstances warrant immediate action, officers may issue tickets, orders, or pursue other enforcement measures authorized by legislation.
6. Case Closure and Follow-Up:
Once the matter has been resolved, the file is closed. Follow-up inspections or monitoring may be conducted when required to ensure ongoing compliance.
